Is it necessary to replace the car shock absorber?
The shock absorber buffer block is indeed necessary to replace if it is damaged. Although it is not expensive on its own, not replacing it will accelerate the damage to the shock absorber, causing abnormal noises and increased jolts. In the long run, it will cost more.
How to determine whether to replace it?
Look at the appearance: If the shock absorber buffer block has cracks, powdering, fragmentation, detachment, or obvious deformation, it should be replaced.
Listen to the sound: When passing over speed bumps or potholes, if you hear "clanging" or "thumping" sounds of metal impact, it is likely that the shock absorber buffer block has failed and the metal parts are directly colliding with the frame.
Feel the hardness: Press it with your hand. If it is very hard and does not spring back, it indicates that it has aged and lost elasticity.
Feel the driving experience: If the body's vibration becomes more intense, there are more aftershocks after crossing a bump, and the comfort decreases, it may also be related to the shock absorber buffer block.
Abnormal noise intensifies: The metal parts directly collide, producing a "clanging" sound, affecting the driving experience.
Comfort and safety decrease: The body shakes more, the rear wheel grip may be affected, and in extreme cases, the handling stability deteriorates.
When to replace: Replace it as soon as it is damaged. There is no need to wait until the shock absorber breaks together.
Pay attention to matching: When replacing, choose accessories with the same hardness as the original factory parts. Too soft will not provide sufficient support, and too hard will be ineffective as a buffer.
Installation suggestion: For some models, the shock absorber needs to be disassembled. It is recommended to be operated by professionals. After replacement, check if four-wheel alignment is needed (replacing the shock absorber alone generally does not require it).
The "shock absorber buffer block" of a car is not a single component. It needs to be distinguished by installation position for its core functions:
Suspension system shock absorber buffer block (the most common, often called "shock absorption gel")
Limit the maximum travel of the suspension: In extreme bumps or when compressed to the bottom, prevent the spring/shock absorber from over-deforming, avoiding hard collisions with the frame.
Protect the shock absorber and suspension components: Absorb high-frequency impacts, reduce oil seal wear and oil leakage risks, and extend the lifespan of the shock absorber (tested to increase by 1-2 times).
Improve handling stability: Suppress over-cambering during cornering, braking nodding, and maintain the vehicle's posture; failure can lead to abnormal noises, rollovers, and even structural damage.
Reduce noise and comfort: Filter fine vibrations, reduce noise and vibration transmitted from the chassis to the cabin.
Materials and maintenance: The mainstream material is porous polyurethane (better than ordinary rubber). It is recommended to check every 2-3 years or 40,000 kilometers; aging is manifested as hardening, cracking, and poor rebound.
Body contact shock absorber blocks (such as the engine hood, door, and inner side of the bumper)
Prevent scratches and damage: Absorb energy during low-speed collisions, door closing, or lid closing to avoid sheet metal dents, paint peeling, and lock mechanism deformation.
Sealing and noise reduction assistance: Fill gaps, reduce wind noise, water leakage, and metal friction noise (such as "muffled sound" when the engine hood closes).
Material characteristics: High rebound sponge or polyurethane, with strong weather resistance; the lifespan is about 3-5 years, and regular pressing tests are required to check elasticity.
Special types (not universal)
Steering column shock absorber block: Specifically used for collision energy absorption (absorbing 50%-70% of the impact), protecting the driver's chest, a passive safety component; it must be replaced after the airbag pops out.
Note: The steering column shock absorber block ≠ suspension shock absorber block, do not confuse their uses.
Daily focus: If there is a "clanging" abnormal noise, loose cornering, oil leakage in the shock absorber, or a weak feel when closing the door, prioritize checking the condition of the corresponding shock absorber buffer block. Replacement should match the original factory hardness and size. Inferior parts may exacerbate wear or affect safety.
