How to replace the central shaft assembly of a car

Replacing the intermediate axle assembly (usually referring to the intermediate transmission shaft in the powertrain or the intermediate shaft in the steering system) requires specific operation based on the model and location. Based on the current mainstream public information, the following is a general process, applicable to the intermediate shaft of the powertrain (such as drive shaft, half shaft, etc.):
Preparations
Tool preparation:
Wrench, socket set (including the appropriate size) Screwdriver
Jack + Safety Bracket (Critical!)
New Intermediate Shaft Assembly (Ensure it matches the original model)
Lubricating Oil or Special Lubricant
Record Paper or Take Photos (Record the disassembly sequence)
‌Notes:
Park the vehicle on a flat and solid ground
Remove the key, pull the handbrake, and disconnect the battery negative terminal (especially when involving the steering system)
Remove the old intermediate shaft
‌Lift the vehicle: Use a jack to lift the faulty side wheel, confirm stability, and then place the safety bracket.
‌Remove the wheel: Remove the tire to gain operation space.
‌Disconnect the connecting components:
Remove the transmission shaft, suspension pull rod, stabilizer bar, universal joint, etc. connected to the intermediate shaft.
‌Key Points: Record the position and sequence of each connection point, and take photos for retention.
‌Remove the old intermediate shaft:
Gently tap or rotate to loosen the stuck part.
Avoid forcefully prying to prevent damage to surrounding parts (such as differential oil seal, suspension bushing).
Install the new intermediate shaft
‌Check the new part: Confirm that the model and specification are completely matched, and there is no damage.
‌Apply lubricating oil: Thinly apply lubricating oil to the spline, bearing, etc.
‌Align and install:
Insert the new intermediate shaft into the original position.
Reinstall the connecting components in the reverse order of disassembly.
‌Tighten the bolts:
Tighten according to the specified torque (refer to the maintenance manual, usually 30–60 Nm, depending on the vehicle model).
Loose bolts can easily come off, while tight bolts can easily slip or damage the threads.
Test and Inspection
‌Reinstall the wheel: Replace the tire, lower the vehicle.
‌Start the test:
Run at idle speed, observe whether the intermediate shaft is stable, and listen for any abnormal noise or vibration.
Short-distance driving test, pay attention to whether there are abnormalities during acceleration and steering.
‌Final Inspection: Confirm that all connection parts are firmly fixed, without oil leakage or looseness.
‌Special Note:
If the intermediate shaft is replaced for the steering system (such as in the case of Ruian RX5), the steps are different: Usually, only the coupling below the steering wheel needs to be disassembled, involving the steering column and steering gear, and the flower joint position needs to be aligned.
When the intermediate shaft of the vehicle is damaged (usually referring to the intermediate support of the transmission shaft), the core symptoms are abnormal noise, body shaking, and abnormal power transmission. Different degrees of damage and locations will present specific signals, and timely maintenance is necessary to prevent safety hazards.
Noise Characteristics
Continuous humming sound: A humming sound is emitted from the chassis during driving, the higher the speed, the louder the sound, mostly caused by the wear and looseness of the intermediate bearing.
Metal impact sound: A distinct metal impact sound or clang occurs when starting, shifting gears, or accelerating abruptly.
Turning click sound: A clear metal impact sound is heard from the chassis during steering, mostly due to wear of the universal joint or excessive clearance of the cross shaft.
Vibration Manifestation
Specific speed shake: In the 60-80 km/h speed range, the steering wheel, vehicle body, or seat experiences obvious shaking, and this shakes more as the vehicle speed increases.
Chassis resonance: When the intermediate support bearing is loose, a dull and muffled sound is emitted accompanied by vibration, and the sound is clear when shifting gears or coasting without shifting gears.
Control and Power
Limited power transmission: The vehicle has difficulty accelerating, climbing slopes, or experiencing temporary power interruption or delay.
Shift failure: Affecting the operation of the transmission, causing difficulty in shifting gears or inability to shift gears.
Other signs: The dust cover of the transmission shaft is damaged and leaking oil, the vehicle veers off course, or the braking performance declines.
