What is the function of the steering knuckle of a car?

The steering knuckle, also known as "sheep's horn", is one of the important components in the car's steering axle, enabling the car to travel stably and sensitively transmit the direction of travel.
The function of the steering knuckle is to transfer and bear the load at the front of the car, support and drive the front wheels to rotate around the main pin, thus enabling the car to turn. During the vehicle's operation, it is subjected to variable impact loads, so it is required to have high strength.
Damage to the car's steering knuckle can lead to a significant decline in vehicle handling and stability. The specific symptoms mainly include abnormal shaking of the steering wheel, heavy steering or jamming, vehicle veering or instability during driving, abnormal noises, and abnormal tire wear.
Main symptoms
Abnormal handling: When turning the steering wheel, it feels unusually heavy or difficult, sometimes there is a sense of jamming, and the steering is not smooth. The free travel (wobble) of the steering wheel becomes significantly larger, and there may be abnormal noises during rotation.
Driving abnormal: When driving straight or braking, the vehicle will automatically veer to one side (run off course), requiring continuous force to correct the direction to maintain a straight line. At medium to high speeds, the steering wheel will experience violent shaking or vibration, and in severe cases, the driving cabin and doors may shake together. The overall driving stability of the vehicle deteriorates, with a "floating" or shaky sensation.
Abnormal noise and wear: On bumpy roads or when steering, abnormal noises (such as metal impact sounds, periodic noises) may be heard in the chassis area. Due to incorrect wheel alignment, uneven abnormal wear of the tires will occur.
Other possible accompanying phenomena
Parts related to the steering gear may leak oil, such as the upper cover and the connection point of the cross joint.
In extreme or severely damaged situations, it may affect braking performance or cause incorrect steering return.
Is the steering knuckle prone to failure?
Under normal circumstances, it is not prone to failure: The steering knuckle is a key load-bearing component of the car's steering and suspension system. It is designed to meet the fatigue life and impact resistance requirements of national standards (such as GB/T 30512). With reasonable use and regular maintenance, it can support the vehicle throughout its entire life cycle.
Under abnormal circumstances, it may fail: The following factors will significantly increase its failure risk:
Manufacturing or material defects: Poor forging process or insufficient material strength can easily lead to cracks or fractures.
Long-term overloading, overspeeding, or frequent passage through harsh road conditions: It intensifies stress concentration, especially at the pin root (the most common fracture location).
Failure of related components: Such as wear of the hub bearing, ball joint, and tie rod, will transfer abnormal loads to the steering knuckle, causing chain damage.
Lack of maintenance: Insufficient lubrication, loose bolts, failure to promptly identify abnormal noises or veering, etc., will accelerate wear or deformation.
Common damage manifestations (to be vigilant)
Heavy steering, slow response
Abnormal noise, shaking or excessive free travel of the steering wheel
Abnormal tire wear, veering of the vehicle
"Clunking" sound or jamming during steering
Suggestion
Regular inspection: Conduct a thorough inspection of the steering system every 50,000 kilometers or when the aforementioned symptoms occur.
Timely replacement: Once damage is confirmed, replace it with original factory parts and perform four-wheel alignment simultaneously.
Avoid bad driving habits: such as sudden steering, driving over obstacles at high speed, and long-term overloading, etc. In conclusion, the steering knuckle itself is not prone to failure, but it is greatly affected by external factors. Its reliability can be ensured through proper usage and regular maintenance.
